The BLS classifies medical coding and billing professionals as a part of the Medical Records and Health Information Technician field and projects a 20% increase in employment before 2018—representing over 37,000 new jobs. This projected growth will be triggered and sustained by the aging population and the increasing number of medical tests, treatments, and procedures. In comparison, the AHIMA study estimates that there will be a shortage of over 75,000 health information specialists, including medical coding and billing professionals, before 2014.
